What a challenging painting! I taught this one in class, and everyone did such a great job, I was blown away. We took it step by step and planned each stage of the painting. Happy with how this one turned out.

The light in this reference image was extraordinary, and I was pretty happy with how I was able to capture it. I was a tighter painter then, as you can see.

This is a different kind of painting for me. It is painted on Hot Press paper, which is calendared and ends up very smooth without the ridges that most watercolor papers have. The paint tends to “sit” on the top of the paper, so moves around easily… difficult to adjust to, but a fun challenge to tackle.

I painted three versions of this still life and like this one the best. We painted the image in class, and tried to keep things very loose. It was a challenge, but I think this one works.

This was a very difficult image to paint, but I wanted my students to tackle the dark values while still making their image look alive and inviting. They didn’t like me very much after painting this one… and I didn’t like myself much either!
